Our Alumni Stories

Blooming Soyinka

Africa Blooms

“I am resilient. It’s one thing to have a vision, but implementing it requires the ability to work past obstacles.”

Blooming Soyinka thinks big. So big, in fact, her international background in finance and accounting wasn’t going to be enough to help her realize her dreams.

“That’s why I wanted to do my MBA at UBC Sauder,” says the MasterCard Foundation Scholarship recipient and founder of Africa Blooms, an e-commerce site that showcases goods made by artisans throughout the African continent.

Now, thanks to her MBA, Blooming has completely revolutionized the way she does business, effectively tripling sales.

Kimberley Zatlyn

Salesforce

“The UBC Sauder MBA really prepared me for the fast-paced and competitive tech world. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me how to perform in a perpetually changing landscape.”

Kimberley was already enjoying a successful advertising career, but recognizing the incredible opportunities of working in tech, she started wondering how to pivot her career to enter that space.

With an MBA from UBC Sauder, Kimberley went from managing national clients to launching multi-platform products on the world stage, proving she’s got what it takes to succeed on a global scale.

Kerry Costello

HeadCheck Health

“I’m solution-oriented. If someone’s facing an obstacle, I want to overcome it with them.”

Kerry Costello has been active in sports for decades. She’s been an athlete, a coach, and now: a tech innovator.

“At UBC Sauder I discovered my passion for sports medicine tech,” she says. A co-founder of HeadCheck Health, Kerry is developing an app that helps assess concussions in athletes, right on the sidelines. It’s being touted as a game-changer.

“We’ve developed a way to objectively measure balance,” she says. “Reliability is higher than 91 per cent, a lot higher than the subjective methods being used in the past.”

Varun Sharma

Amazon

“I always aspire to the highest standard”

Varun Sharma’s path to Amazon was one of a kind; he was an officer in the Indian army and worked with one of the fastest growing banks in India. When he wanted a career that would combine his passion for finance with his exceptional leadership skills, he pursued an MBA at UBC Sauder. Here, he received personalized coaching from the Business Career Centre and landed an internship at a Vancouver-based startup.

Now he leads a team of 200+ people in Amazon Robotics.

“My UBC MBA put me on the right path,” he says.
