UBC MM positions alum at forefront of green tech

Zeynep Kucukerol wanted to work in green technologies. But because she trained as an industrial engineer, she needed to broaden her education.

“I wanted business skills that would open doors into the niche area I had set my sights on,” she says.

Zeynep decided on UBC Sauder’s Master of Management (MM) because it offers substantial consulting experience in Vancouver, a city dedicated to green initiatives. Now, she’s in marketing at Solegear Bioplastic Technologies, which makes sustainable plastics out of renewable material.

“There are many paths opening up in front of me now,” she says. “I owe that to my MM.”

John Holt

UBC MM Graduate

Vice President, Multinationals

“I made the right choice because...
I had limited knowledge of business before the MM program. UBC Sauder gave me the finance credibility to land a global role at HSBC.

From English teacher to VP Multinationals at HSBC

John Holt felt the business world calling. But as a political science major, he didn’t have the business background to launch the career he wanted.

“My undergraduate degree gave me a good understanding of how the world works,” Holt says. “But it didn’t cover how the business world works.”

So Holt sought a Master of Management (MM) at UBC Sauder.

“The MM gave me the fundamental building blocks of business,” he says.

It also helped him land at HSBC where he is now Vice President, Multinationals in Bangkok, after having worked in the bank’s London and Paris offices.

“My UBC MM gave me the finance credibility that led to the career I have now,” he says.

Dentist-to-be uses UBC MM to cut her teeth in the tech sector

Christina Meng wanted to be a dentist. But the further she got into her Bachelor of Science, the clearer it was that dentistry wasn’t for her.

A summer job at Bell Media crystalized a new direction for Christina.

“I found I loved marketing and promotions,” she says.

But transitioning from science to business isn’t easy. So Christina pursued a Master of Management at UBC Sauder to make it happen. Now, she’s a Customer Success Manager at Slack, a communications platform that’s generating serious buzz.

“I love what I’m doing and there’s no way I would have made the switch if it weren’t for the UBC MM program,” she says.
