Blooming Soyinka

Africa Blooms

The UBC MBA enabled Blooming to launch a global business venture.

“ I am a born challenger because...

I am resilient. It’s one thing to have a vision, but implementing it requires the ability to work past obstacles.”

Blooming Soyinka thinks big. So big, in fact, her international background in finance and accounting wasn’t going to be enough to help her realize her dreams.

“That’s why I wanted to do my MBA at UBC Sauder,” says the MasterCard Foundation Scholarship recipient and founder of Africa Blooms, an e-commerce site that showcases goods made by artisans throughout the African continent.

Now, thanks to her MBA, Blooming has completely revolutionized the way she does business, effectively tripling sales.

Cartems Donuterie

The UBC MBA was instrumental in developing Jordan’s entrepreneurial dream.

“ I am a born challenger because...

I love making things better. I’m never satisfied with the current state of things.”

Jordan Cash had a dream that he owned a donut shop. All he needed was the business acumen to complement his entrepreneurial spirit. Through the courses he took and projects he explored in the UBC MBA program, Jordan built the foundation for Cartems Donuterie, which is now a rapidly expanding brand.

“There isn’t a day that goes by that I’m not thinking about marketing or operations, and thinking about what I learned at UBC Sauder,” he says.

HeadCheck Health

The UBC MBA helped Kerry turn her passion into an innovative business.

“ I am a born challenger because...

I’m solution-oriented. If someone’s facing an obstacle, I want to overcome it with them.”

Kerry Costello has been active in sports for decades. She’s been an athlete, a coach, and now: a tech innovator.

“At UBC Sauder I discovered my passion for sports medicine tech,” she says. A co-founder of HeadCheck Health, Kerry is developing an app that helps assess concussions in athletes, right on the sidelines. It’s being touted as a game-changer.

“We’ve developed a way to objectively measure balance,” she says. “Reliability is higher than 91 per cent, a lot higher than the subjective methods being used in the past.”

Cordia Chan

Karma Collective

The UBC MBA gave Cordia the confidence to run her own company.

“ I am a born challenger because...

I love to drive real change by harnessing social ventures to empower communities”

Before pursuing her MBA, Cordia Chan was working for an experiential marketing company. And while she loved certain aspects of her role – it required a lot of creativity and gave her a fair bit of autonomy – the health advocate in her didn’t love promoting colas and beer.

So Cordia set her sights on an MBA at UBC Sauder. Now, she’s running Karma Collective, a yoga-inspired clothing company that gives a portion of its proceeds to community projects

“My MBA gave me the courage, confidence and knowledge to step out of my comfort zone,” she says. “Now I’m living in Bali, running my own company and doing what I love every day.”

Kim Zatlyn

Kim Zatlyn

The UBC MBA prepared Kim for an even more demanding, even faster-paced career in tech.

“ I am a born challenger because...

I thrive in fast-paced, demanding environments and get things done.”

By any measure, Kim Zatlyn was successful. She was thriving in the demanding world of advertising. But as she surveyed the professional landscape, she didn’t see a role she could envision herself filling in ten years.

To bridge the gap between where she was and where she wanted to be, Kim pursued an MBA at UBC Sauder.

“My MBA gave me insight into what I might want to do and how I might get there,” she says.

Today, Kim is Senior Manager, Product Marketing, at Salesforce in San Francisco.

“Salesforce is the fastest moving company I’ve ever worked for,” Kim says. “My UBC MBA prepared me to work at this pace.”
